Where to Spot Wisconsin’s Wildlife While Hiking in Fall

Wildlife road trip

Whether you’re an avid wildlife watcher or just enjoy being surrounded by nature, Wisconsin’s trails offer a unique opportunity to see animals in their natural habitats. Walking through the woods, hearing the crunch of leaves underfoot, and spotting a deer or bird just going about its day is truly a wholesome experience. Here are some of the best places to hike in Wisconsin if you hope to catch a glimpse of the state’s wildlife in the fall.

Why Fall is the Best Time for Wildlife Spotting?

Animals are more visible as they prepare for winter by gathering food or getting ready to migrate. You’re also more likely to see them during the cooler parts of the day—early morning and late afternoon—because they’re more active then. Plus, the vibrant fall backdrop makes every hike more scenic, even if you don’t spot as much wildlife as you’d hoped.

Devil’s Lake State Park – Baraboo

Devil’s Lake State Park is a no-brainer for fall hikes in Wisconsin. It’s the most popular state park for a reason, with its towering cliffs and crystal-clear lake, but fall makes it even more stunning. I remember one hike where I paused on the East Bluff Trail at sunrise, and a group of white-tailed deer quietly grazed below. It felt surreal, like stepping into a painting. The park is also home to wild turkeys, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a fox darting through the trees. Don’t forget to look up—bald eagles often soar above the lake, hunting for fish.

Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area

If birds are your thing, Horicon Marsh should be at the top of your fall bucket list. This massive freshwater marsh becomes a hub for migratory birds in autumn, including Canada geese, sandhill cranes, and tundra swans. Hiking here in the fall is like being in the middle of a nature documentary—birds fill the sky, calling out as they prepare to head south. The marsh’s flat, easy trails make it accessible for hikers of all levels, and there are several platforms where you can sit quietly and just watch nature unfold around you. One of my favorite memories is sitting there, surrounded by golden grasses, listening to the birds’ calls; it’s something everyone should experience at least once.

Peninsula State Park – Door County

Peninsula State Park is one of those spots where you can really lose yourself in the beauty of fall. The Sentinel Trail takes you through a kaleidoscope of sugar maples and birches, their leaves glowing in shades of orange and yellow. Deer are common here, often seen nibbling at the edges of the woods. Red foxes are another treat, and if you’re patient, you might catch one darting across the trail. From the top of Eagle Tower, the view is breathtaking. Fall colors stretch as far as the eye can see, with Lake Michigan glimmering in the distance. It’s hard not to feel completely at peace here, with nature putting on its best show.

Rib Mountain State Park – Wausau

If you’re up for a more challenging hike with some of the best fall views in the state, head to Rib Mountain State Park. The park’s trails wind through forests of oak and birch, their leaves blazing in autumn colors. Wildlife is abundant here; you’ll likely see white-tailed deer or maybe even a red fox slipping through the trees. Hawks and owls also make regular appearances, adding to the park’s already wild vibe. One of my favorite memories from Rib Mountain was watching a group of deer near the summit at sunset. The sky was a brilliant mix of pinks and oranges, and the deer seemed totally at ease, as if they were enjoying the view as much as I was.

Kettle Moraine State Forest – Northern Unit

Fall is when the Kettle Moraine State Forest truly shines. The Northern Unit’s Ice Age Trail offers a chance to see Wisconsin’s glacial landscape while surrounded by the colors of fall. It’s also prime territory for spotting wildlife. I’ve seen plenty of white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and even the occasional coyote while camping here. The mix of hardwoods and pines provides shelter for many different animals, and the trails are often quiet enough to hear the rustle of critters as they prepare for winter. It’s peaceful, wild, and incredibly beautiful.

The Magic of Fall Migration

While hiking in Wisconsin during fall, don’t forget to look up. One of the most incredible wildlife spectacles is the mass migration of birds heading south for the winter. The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge is a great place to witness this, as it becomes a temporary home for tundra swans, sandhill cranes, and Canada geese. If you’ve never seen hundreds of birds take flight at once, it’s something that will stay with you forever. And it’s not just birds—fall is also the time when monarch butterflies make their long journey south, often clustering in trees along hiking paths. There’s something incredibly awe-inspiring about witnessing these migrations—it reminds you of just how connected we all are to the natural world.

Tips for Fall Wildlife Watching

  • Go early or late: Wildlife is most active around dawn and dusk, so plan your hikes accordingly.
  • Be patient and quiet: The less noise you make, the better your chances of seeing animals up close.
  • Bring binoculars: Especially for birdwatching, a good pair of binoculars can make all the difference.
  • Stick to the trails: This not only protects the habitat but also increases your chances of seeing wildlife without startling them.

Bottom Line

Whether you’re walking through the golden grasses of Horicon Marsh or watching eagles soar above Devil’s Lake, every hike offers the chance to connect with nature in a meaningful way. So, grab your boots, pack some snacks, and get ready to experience the magic of Wisconsin’s wildlife this fall. You never know what you might encounter, but one thing’s for sure—it’ll be an adventure you won’t forget.
