South Africa | March 22–31, 2027 | Women Only

Drakensberg & Safari 2027

10 Days  ·  Limited to 12 Women  ·  Registration Opens April 30, 2026

“This is not a tour. This is a homecoming — through my eyes.”

I grew up in the Free State, staring at the Drakensberg from a distance. Those mountains were calling me my entire childhood — and I was told they weren’t for me. So I left South Africa, landed in Utah, and climbed a mountain alone three days later. Nature had always been calling. I had finally answered.

Now I’m taking you back to where it all started. Ten days through the most spectacular mountains in Africa — climbing the legendary chain ladders to the top of the Amphitheatre escarpment, standing at the base of the second tallest waterfall in the world, hiking gorges and valleys that most visitors never see. And finishing with three days of luxury Big 5 safari in a private malaria-free reserve in KwaZulu-Natal.

I speak isiZulu and Sesotho. I have family and community here. These are not foreign lands to me — they are home. When you travel with me, you don’t get the tourist version of South Africa. You get mine.

Who This Trip Is For

This trip is for every woman who has ever had a dream to witness Africa — to see it, to touch it, to feel the soil beneath her feet. Not from a distance. Not through a screen. But in her body, fully present, standing inside the place she has always imagined.

On this trip, you will not just visit Africa. You will explore the real adventure of it. You will eat the food. Learn the language. Wake up in the mountains. Walk where the Zulu people walked. And stand at the base of Tugela Falls — the second tallest waterfall in the world — and know that you made it here on your own two feet.

You don’t need prior hiking experience. You don’t need to have it figured out. What you need is the desire — and I will take care of everything else. I grew up here. I speak the languages. These are my mountains and my people, and I am bringing you home with me.

10-Day Itinerary

The journey begins in Johannesburg and moves south into the Drakensberg foothills before ascending to the high escarpment — then finishes in the bush.

DAY 1 | Monday · March 22

Arrivals at OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg). Your driver-guide meets you and begins the scenic transfer south to the Northern Drakensberg (±4–5 hours, 360 km). Arrive at Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge in the evening. Dinner included. First breath of mountain air.

DAY 2 | Tuesday · March 23

Breakfast at the lodge. Scenic drive through Golden Gate Highlands National Park — golden sandstone cliffs, rolling valleys, grazing antelope. Explore Clarens, the Jewel of the Free State — art galleries, craft shops, local brewery. Return to Witsieshoek for sunset and dinner. Briefing for tomorrow’s big climb.

DAY 3 | Wednesday · March 24 — THE CHAIN LADDERS

Open vehicle transfer along rugged 4×4 mountain road to Sentinel Car Park. Ascend the Amphitheatre escarpment via the iconic chain ladders — two vertical iron ladders bolted into the cliff face, rising straight to the roof of Africa. Wild camp on the escarpment edge with catered dinner under the stars. Porters carry all camp equipment. Tugela Falls — the second tallest waterfall in the world — begins its plunge just steps from camp.

DAY 4 | Thursday · March 25

Sunrise on the Amphitheatre — one of the most extraordinary mornings of your life. Breakfast prepared at camp. Descend via the chain ladders. Transfer back to Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge. Hot showers and comfortable beds. Afternoon free: rest, optional quad biking or spa treatments. Dinner included.

DAY 5 | Friday · March 26

Full-day guided hike through the breathtaking Mahai Valley. Winding mountain paths beneath sandstone cliffs. Gudu Falls and natural swimming pools. Packed lunch on the trail. Cultural insights on San rock art and Drakensberg heritage. Transfer to Mont-Aux-Sources Hotel. Dinner included.

DAY 6 | Saturday · March 27 — TUGELA GORGE

Full-day hike up the legendary Tugela Gorge Trail. Follow the Tugela River upstream through indigenous forest and boulder fields. Natural pools and river crossings. Picnic lunch beside the river. The gorge narrows — and then the cliffs open up to reveal Tugela Falls in full cascade. Return to Mont-Aux-Sources Hotel. Dinner included.

DAY 7 | Sunday · March 28 — CATHEDRAL PEAK

Transfer to the Cathedral Peak region (±1.5 hours). Choice of two hikes: Cathedral Peak Summit — a full-day challenging ascent with panoramic views, OR Mushroom Rock and Ribbon Falls Loop — a moderate trail through grassland and forest to sparkling waterfalls. Dinner included.

DAY 8 | Monday · March 29 — SAFARI BEGINS

Farewell to the mountains. Scenic transfer to Nambiti Private Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal (±2.5 hours). Luxury safari lodge check-in. Late afternoon Big 5 game drive — lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo, and more. Sundowner drinks in the bush. Three-course dinner by the fire.

DAY 9 | Tuesday · March 30 — FULL SAFARI DAY

Morning and afternoon game drives guided by expert rangers and trackers. Between drives: lodge pool, optional spa treatments, guided bush walks, or watching wildlife from the deck. All meals and select drinks included.

DAY 10 | Wednesday · March 31 — FAREWELL

Final sunrise game drive (time permitting). Breakfast at the lodge. Transfer to OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg (±4.5–5 hours). Depart with the mountains still in your legs and Africa still in your chest.

Meet Your Host: Dini

My name is Dineo Dowd — but everyone calls me Dini. I was born and raised in the Free State, South Africa, in the shadow of the Drakensberg mountains. Growing up under apartheid, Black people were not permitted in national parks. I spent my childhood staring at those mountains, watching hikers disappear over ridgelines I was never invited onto, wondering what was on the other side.

At 25, I immigrated to the United States. Three days after landing in Salt Lake City, Utah, I followed strangers up a mountain trail, watched the sun set from the top, and felt — for the first time — completely free.

I am now based in Madison, Wisconsin, where I founded Wisconsin Adventure Family — a platform dedicated to getting women, families, and children of color outdoors. I speak isiZulu and Sesotho. I have summited Mount Kilimanjaro three times, each time leading a group of women. Every single one of them reached the summit.

“The mountains were always for me. I just had to travel across the world to find out.”

When you travel with me, you get the local. The language. The relationships. You get a South African woman bringing you home — to her mountains, her stories, her people.
