Patrick Marsh
Located adjacent to the City of Sun Prairie, the 145-acre Parick Marsh is surrounded by land owned and managed by the Wisconsin DNR, Dane County, and Groundswell. The conservation and recreation values of Patrick Marsh merited its inclusion in the Wisconsin DNR’s Land Legacy Report, a list of the 229 places that are critical to protecting “to meet Wisconsin’s future conservation and recreation needs in the next 50 years.” Patrick Marsh is well-situated to meet some of those needs, is located on the doorstep of the city of Sun Prairie, which is home to 31,000 people

If you want to take a break and escape the busy street noise, this area is right on my doorstep. Follow the gravel trail from the trailhead. It is a loop; we brought the stroller along and left it on the viewpoint; the trail is not stroller-friendly. It gets narrow, the trails are well maintained, there are few benches near the lake, and the viewpoint was my daughter’s favorite stop; we watched the birds from the deck and listened to the species; it was so magical.

We hiked through the woods for about 0.75 mi at toddler pace; she stopped and picked up some sticks along the way and asked lots of questions about the birds flying by; then we noticed these wooden tables along the way on the trail; she wanted to stop and put her drink on top and take a break.
The trail is flat and suitable for all ages. There are a few boards along the way about the history of Patrick Marsh; make time to stop and read so much to learn and research when you get home.

We haven’t been able to catch the sunrise yet, but I will update you again in the summer on the changes from this trail.

Take your time when you visit Patrick Marsh. Bring your favorite beverage and maybe a book to read and enjoy quality time outside. After about 50 minutes, we returned to the gate where we started. We hiked the whole loop for 1.2 miles and a 7-minute ride to get home; you can’t beat that.

Let’s practice, leave no trace
